Enhancing Transporter's Job Discovery Journey

Kargo relaunched their marketplace app in early 2019. There are still so many gaps in the apps that we need to fill out. Kargo’s team did empathy research project and also discovery project the end-to-end process of transporter's journey so we can start working backward from there. =

✨ Outcomes

  • Overall, Filtering is shown to be successful in driving bids

  • 72% of app users select a filter, and 62% of users filter by truck type

  • Users that select a filter are 5x more likely to bid in that session (7.4% of users will bid in the same session if they filter vs 1.5% for those that do not filter)

  • Vehicle type is by far the most common filter

Design Process Overview

This was my first end-to-end project as an intern at Kargo Technologies. After Kargo relaunched their application, the tech team are working so fast, for this project specifically, we did everything only in 2 weeks. It was very challenging, looking back, prototyping technology wasn't as advanced as now, we didn't have a design system setted up. So we need to be very considerate in managing our time to deliver the best possible solution.

Discovery

Discovery

Discovery

The first signal that we got for this project is the time funnel from transporter opening our marketplace till they bid is very slow. So we were wondering why is it happening? we came up with an initial hypothesis that transporter need filter function to help them to bid, but we agreed to explore the core need first before jumping to any solution.

Job Discovery Prototyping

Due to the time constraint that we have, instead of using we were trying to recreate an experience where the transporter needs to find the job that they want. From there, we could understand how they think and prioritize a job.

Field Research x Contextual Inquiry

We were in the middle of empathy research at that time, so we add this job discovery on top the research that was running at that time. We got a lot of insights from their workplace, trying to understand how they do their job in their context.

After our visit to the transporter, we start to synthesize the result. We got lots of findings that we can explore further, such as transporter behavior to search for jobs online & from their previous customer through WhatsApp groups. But our focus is in our marketplace as of now. and this is the result, we get a mental model map

Opportunity Finding

Opportunity Finding

Opportunity Finding

From several insights that we got, we choose two main items that we want to work on one with the most impactful and moderate effort, and another one is an experimentation

  1. Filter & Default Sort function

  2. Job Recommendation (MVP, not part of this case study)

Delivery

Delivery

I started to explore the search function use case, did a benchmark with some other apps and came up with several prototype (I don't have the documentation, because it was all paper prototyping for the concept) we use paper prototyping alot back then because the time to develop is really long at that time (it can take up to 2-4 days in total + getting the participants is really hard)

After doing the UT we did some small adjustment to the design, and its ready to be developed.

Learning

  • When time constraint is real, as a designer we should be very flexible in our approach, the next step is being aware and actively communicating the trade-off to the team

  • It's our job as designers to help the team to see the vision of each journey

  • As a designer, we should be comfortable working in any type of fidelity.
